Transientenspannungsunterdrückungsgeräte (TVS) auf Thyristorbasis sind Überspannungsschutzgeräte, die unter normalen Betriebsbedingungen einem offenen Stromkreis nahe kommen. Wird an ihnen eine Spannung angelegt, die einen bestimmten Wert, die sogenannte Kippspannung, übersteigt, gelangen sie in einen leitenden Zustand, der einem Kurzschluss nahekommt. Dieser Zustand bleibt bestehen, bis der Stromfluss durch das Gerät durch einen äußeren Einfluss innerhalb des Stromkreises unter einen Mindestwert namens „Haltestrom“ reduziert wird.
