CPLDs sind benutzerkonfigurierbare integrierte Schaltkreise, die zur Durchführung logischer Operationen und Informationsverarbeitung verwendet werden und einen höheren Funktionsumfang (d. h. mehr Logikgatter) aufweisen als PLD- oder PAL-Geräte, jedoch weniger als FPGAs. CPLDs verfügen typischerweise über einen nichtflüchtigen Konfigurationsspeicher, der die Speicherung und Beibehaltung der vom Benutzer gewünschten Konfiguration direkt auf dem Gerät ermöglicht, wobei diese Informationen auch dann erhalten bleiben, wenn das Gerät von der Stromversorgung getrennt wird.
