Produkte der Fototransistorfamilie sind diskrete lichtempfindliche Komponenten, die sich ähnlich wie ein Bipolartransistor verhalten, jedoch einfallendes Licht anstelle eines über einen Geräteanschluss angelegten elektrischen Stroms verwenden, um das Gerät zum Leiten zu bringen. Im Vergleich zu Fotodioden erzeugen Fototransistoren im Allgemeinen einen viel größeren Ausgangsstrom bei gleicher Intensität des einfallenden Lichts, reagieren jedoch langsamer auf Änderungen der Lichtintensität. Diese Unterschiede führen dazu, dass Fototransistoren einfacher anzuwenden, aber für den Hochgeschwindigkeitsbetrieb weniger nützlich sind.
